Hi all!
I’ve been eating low-carb since around March and Keto since around June. I have lost about 40 pounds and have around 60 more to go until my first goal. This is really the first time I’ve ever given a crap about myself or my health. I grew up never touching vegetables and eating ALL the processed, sugary crap and drinking several sodas a day.
In August I got blood work done with a functional medicine doctor. My thyroid levels were low-normal. I have a severe case of Adrenal Fatigue. My fasting glucose was 96 (it is now around 80-85, I test daily). I have pretty bad Candida in the gut. I’m not insulin-resistant though which is pretty much miraculous considering my diet previous to Keto. I also had food intolerance testing done. I’m HIGHLY intolerant to whey, dairy, eggs, grains, garlic and pineapple.
My main concern is my hormones. I was on the birth control pill for 10 years straight. I then did the Depo shot for a year (my main reason for BC was severe cramps). I got off birth control last November and haven’t had a period since. We tested my hormones and estrogen is normal but progesterone is in the post-menopausal range. I even did a ten-day round of progesterone which was supposed to jump start a period but it didn’t work.
I’ve read a lot about how eating more carbs than the standard under 30 or 20g that Keto prescribes is optimal for healing hormones.
At first my main concern was weight loss as I have Fibromyalgia, depression and bad knees and being so overweight (280 on a 5’5" frame) was exacerbating both. But as I have lost 40lbs my depression is completely gone and fibro is manageable.
I guess my question is this: have any of you ladies gone through this “post birth control syndrome”, and what has helped you heal hormones? Paleo seems to make more sense seeing as I’m intolerant to dairy and I’m not intolerant at all to any vegetables, even starchy ones. One day I’ll probably need to go lower on carbs to treat the Candida, but my main concern is getting my period back and healing my adrenals. I’ll probably still eat lower carbs just because I know it helps my chronic pain…but potatoes, sweet potatoes, and vegetables higher in carbs don’t bother me.
I know there are podcasts and blog that address amenorrhea but I don’t find that I connect with them because usually they lost their periods from over training and under eating…body fat is definitely NOT the reason I have no period lol.
Any info would be great! I’m excited to see how Paleo can help me.
