I have been Paleo for over 7 months now and while I have seen a lot of improvements, there have been some issues that I have been dealing with.
My skin became super dry and I would get itching spells every night. I became histamine intolerant and had weird food allergy symptoms that I never had before. I was cold all the time. I lost too much weight (esp. muscle mass) in part due to almost complete loss of appetite. Although I slept fantastically and my energy levels throughout the day were pretty consistent, I would get instances often where I felt like I would faint. Acne spots on the face would never heal and I would consistently get pimples on my jawline. Rosacea and dandruff. One of the worst things, though, was constipation.
There are a lot of positives to the Paleo diet for me that I should definitely mention so it doesn’t seem like I only have negative things to say about it. My sinuses have been completely clear, I don’t get sick really at all, most food cravings went away, acne in the T-zone subsided, and the best part of all was the way my view of food and nutrition completely changed.
A couple weeks ago I read about Ray Peat and his stances on nutrition and diet and thought I would give it a try. Just adding fruit back into my diet (I tried staying super low sugar before) made some big improvements. I used to eat a lot of nut butter, sardines, and salmon before, but now I have cut back on all PUFA (including Omega 3). This alongside with eating less veggies and more fruit has helped a ton. I tried re-introducing dairy in the form of cheese, but I had almost an instantaneous reaction in which my sinuses clogged up and cystic pimples popped up on my face. I have cut out all dairy again, but I might try goat products a little later. I still eat no grains, legumes, added sugars, and little to no processed foods.
The positives that I have noticed 1) no more acne along jawline/beard area 2) constipation is reduced 3) muscle mass is already reappearing 4) histamine intolerance gone 5) weird food allergy symptoms gone 6) dry skin gone 7) coldness gone 8) appetite back 9) more energy in the gym 10) rosacea and dandruff fading. Negatives 1) sleep is not great 2) teeth don’t feel as clean or healthy 3) I need to eat all the time 4) oily facial skin 5) bad reaction to dairy.
